Diverticulosis is the condition where diverticula is present in the colon i.e., mucosal and submucosal layers of colon protrude out through the weakness in the muscle layer of colon. Typically, they are not inflamed but when they get inflamed it is called as Diverticulitis. Diverticulosis presents with no symptoms, whereas Diverticulitis presents with bleeding, pain, intestinal obstruction, peritonitis, abscess, fistulas etc. Most commonly it involves Sigmoid colon due to the increased pressures at this site. It is an incidental finding on CT abdomen and diagnosis confirmed by Colonoscopy. Less common before 40 years but the incidence increases with age, with the prevalence more common above 60 years of age.
