What are ‘man boobs’ and how can you prevent them?

All over the world, the mention of “boobs” often suggests the breasts of a woman. The one-million-dollar question now is, has the world suddenly forgotten that men also have boobs? Indeed, little or nothing is talked about the care of men’s breasts. Coming to medical science, the accumulation of fatty tissue in the man’s breast tissue will lead to a condition called gynecomastia. Well, men with this condition have breasts similar to those of women. According to research, 30% of the men suffer from this problem at any point of time. But what are the root causes of this condition? Let’s find out.

Causes of Gynecomastia

  • Hormonal imbalance between testosterone and estrogen levels. This typically occurs during puberty or old age.
  • Obesity leads to generalized increased distribution of fat, In the end, this culminates in appearance of enlarged boobs in men. This condition is called as pseudo-gynecomastia.
  • Radiation, chemotherapy, autoimmune diseases, alcoholism, and drug abuse (marijuana, alcohol) are among other causes.
  • Genetic component also plays a role.
  • Moreover, medications like opioids, steroids, anti-depressants, benzodiazepines, statins, amphetamines, and androgen blockers also cause gynecomastia.

Impact of Gynecomastia:

  • Physical Impact: There will be increased risk of morbidity, as obesity is the major risk factor for many non-communicable diseases
  • Psychological Impact: It decreases the self-confidence among the affected men. Without mincing words, this may lead to isolation and social stigma. Isolation may further contribute to depression, anxiety, panic attacks and social phobia.
