Best ways to improve erectile dysfunction

  • Quit smoking: Smoking can cause harmful effects both in the short term and long term. Nicotine is the substance present in cigarettes, and it causes constriction of blood vessels that are required for erection. It also causes progressive thickening of arteries which contributes to erectile dysfunction.
  • Diet: A healthy diet may help as obesity and high cholesterol have been shown to cause erectile dysfunction. Diet should include eating foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol with frequent servings of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Quit alcohol: Alcohol does not cause enhancement of libido as popularly believed. When taken in small amounts, it can relieve anxiety and may help with erectile dysfunction, but when taken in large amounts, alcohol itself can cause erectile dysfunction.
  • Regular exercise: Daily exercise for about 20 to 30 minutes helps improving libido. Exercise improves blood circulation to all parts of the body including the pelvic musculature which is necessary for an erection. A strong pelvic floor enhances rigidity during erections and helps keep blood from leaving the penis by pressing on a key vein. Kegel exercises which strengthen these muscles have been shown to improve the outcome.
  • Nutritional supplements:
    • L-Arginine: L-arginine is an amino acid naturally present in the body. It helps make nitric oxide. Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels to facilitate a successful erection.
    • Citrulline: an amino acid found in high concentrations of watermelon, is found to improve blood flow to the penis
    • Zinc supplements also help improve erectile dysfunction.
  • Herbal remedies:
    • Yohimbe bark supplements: The extract of the bark of the yohimbe tree has been used as an aphrodisiac in western Africa.
    • Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium): Horny goat weed is a herb that has been used in China for centuries to treat low libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, and other conditions
    • Panax Ginseng and Rhodiola Rosea: is also called the “herbal Viagra”. Panax ginseng (red ginseng) has enormous research behind it. Researchers concluded there is suggestive evidence for the effectiveness of red ginseng in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
  • Medical check-up: It is important to evaluate the cause of erectile dysfunction as many medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, atherosclerosis, low testosterone and neurological disease may lead to erectile dysfunction.
  • Medications: Oral medications that have successfully treated erectile dysfunction include: Sildenafil (Viagra), Tadalafil (Cialis), Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn), Avanafil (Stendra). These medications enhance the effects of nitric oxide, a natural chemical produced in the body that relaxes muscles in the penis. Thereby increasing blood flow and helps you get an erection in response to sexual stimulation.
  • Self-injections: These are injected directly into the penis to achieve an erection. Commonly used medications include alprostadil, papaverine, and phentolamine. Alprostadil is a drug that dilates the blood vessels. It boosts blood flow throughout the body, including the penis, resulting in an erection. With this method, you use a fine needle to inject the medications into the base or side of your penis. Injection therapy helps you produce an erection that lasts about 20 to 40 minutes. Alprostadil urethral suppository is also available.
  • Testosterone replacement therapy: Inadequate production of testosterone is not a common cause of erectile dysfunction. When erectile dysfunction does occur due to decreased testosterone production, testosterone replacement therapy may improve the problem.
  • Alternative remedies: DHEA Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It converts to both estrogen and testosterone in the body. Those receiving the DHEA are more likely to achieve and maintain an erection
  • A vacuum constriction device (VCD) is a battery-powered external pump. It is used right before intercourse to pull blood into the penis. The tube is placed over the penis, and then the pump is used to suck out the air inside the tube. The erection typically lasts long enough for a couple to have sex.
  • A penile prosthesis or implant: This treatment involves surgically placing devices into both sides of the penis. These implants consist of either inflatable or semi rigid rods. Inflatable devices allow you to control when and how long you want an erection.
  • Vascular reconstructive surgery: Blood vessel surgery is recommended only when vessels are obstructed, causing erectile dysfunction. It is treated by bypassing obstructed penile arteries
  • Acupuncture: Through this alternative therapy, fine needles are placed in various parts of the body to relieve pain or stress. Studies have shown positive results with acupuncture.
  • Psychological counselling: If erectile dysfunction is caused by stress, anxiety or depression — or the condition is creating stress and relationship tension — you, or you and your partner may need to visit a psychologist or counsellor.
  • Possible future treatments: research is in progress for some treatment options which may be available for use in the near future. These include Uprima (apomorphine), Topiglan, Melanocortin activators, and gene therapy.
