Physiological functioning of several organs in our body gradually deteriorate with age. The health of eyes also declines once we get old. Eyes are subjected to various age related changes which can lead to diminished vision. Here are few tips to maintain better eye health after the age of 60.

  • Balanced diet: Diet rich in anti-oxidants, vitamin A, C, E are very essential for good eye health. Carrots and green leafy vegetables should be included in the diet. Fishes rich in omega 3 fatty acids should be included in diet as they promote macula health.
  • Dietary supplements rich in leutein, zeaxanthine and omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Regular exercise will help in improving blood circulation and oxygen levels, helps in removal of toxins.
  • No excess alcohol is recommended.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Avoid high fat diet and diet rich in saturated fats.
  • Wear sun glasses.
  • Protect eyes from all sorts of injuries.
  • Maintain normal blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
  • Go for regular eye checkups.
  • Sleep well: adequate sleep provides lubrication with which irritants will be cleared out.
  • Eye exercises are important for good eye health (according to some authors).
  • Do not sit for prolonged hours in front of computer. If you are sitting for prolonged hours, keep the following things in mind.
  • Blink frequently.
  • Level of screen should be below your eye level.
  • The screen should be at a distance of 20-24 inches from eyes.
  • Take a break for every 15 minutes.
